Cockroaches and how to deal with them

When you have a cockroach problem, you just want it to go away. But understanding these critters and how they behave can help you stay on top of cockroach problems for the future. And while we will give you all the guidance you need at your appointment, these tips will give you a head start.

Australian cockroach

30 to 35mm long with yellow streaks, these roaches aren’t actually native as the name suggests, and tend to dwell in outdoor areas during the day and enter buildings at night.

German cockroach

12 to 15mm in length with two dark stripes. They are usually found in indoor wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Oriental cockroach

20 to 25mm long and dark brown or black, they are typically found in rubbish areas and cool, damp areas such as drains.

Identifying Other Cockroaches

COCKROACH BEHAVIOUR

Cockroaches have thrived in our urban environment thanks to their sneaky behaviour. Primarily nocturnal, they can stay unnoticed until the population grows quite large. Many homeowners are unaware that cockroaches are nearby until summer hits, when the warmth and humidity encourage more noticeable activity. Usually, however, they spend their time hiding in dark cracks and crevices until you go to bed. Then, they will come out for food and water and may leave behind droppings, carcasses, and minor stains

COCKROACH CONTROL EAST MAITLAND – PROBLEMS CAUSED BY COCKROACHES

These pests aren’t just an eyesore; they can also be a hazard for your home. Cockroaches love food, moisture, and warmth. Unfortunately, that means that they are attracted to the most vulnerable areas of your home, like the kitchen and pantry. Once there, roaches may transfer disease and bacteria that they’ve picked up from another location, which is a concern for your health and safety. Along with the potential for spreading illness, cockroaches can cause other issues, including:
  • Allergies and asthma
  • Damage to food packaging, fabric, and furniture.
  • Unpleasant, musty smell

Tips to prevent cockroaches

For every cockroach that you see, there are at least ten more. So once you start seeing these creatures out and about, you should give your local pest technician a call, and we’ll help ascertain how bad the problem might be and then provide effective cockroach control in East Maitland. We always think prevention is better, so here are a few tips you can use to stop cockroaches before they infest

Remove their food

Did you know roaches don’t just eat human food? To effectively remove food sources, you should:

  • Store food in tightly sealed containers
  • Wipe down benches and clean up any crumbs
  • Wash dishes and cutlery before going to bed
  • Wash out any pet bowls and keep pet food sealed
  • Rinse and remove cans and bottles, and ensure no sticky, sugary residue
  • Empty bins regularly

Remove their drinking water

Like us, cockroaches need water to survive, but they aren’t picky about where it comes from. To prevent them from being attracted to the home, you can:

  • Fix leaking taps, pipes, and sinks as quickly as possible
  • Remove standing water (in buckets, sinks, baths, etc.)
  • Mop up excess water after cleaning
  • Clear drains if slow or not draining

De-clutter

Why not make your space more enjoyable while removing the risk of cockroaches? Most houses usually have a little bit of clutter that, when tidied up, can prevent roaches. Some examples are:

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Shredded paper
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Garden debris
  • Unused items in cupboards, pantries, and linen closets

Seal entry points

To prevent them from getting in, you can:

  • Seal cracks in skirting boards and behind electrical sockets
  • Fill gaps around pipes and drains
  • Fix cracks, crevices, and holes between your property and your neighbour’s
