Smoky Brown Cockroach
Periplaneta fuliginosa
Characteristics
The smoky brown cockroach is one of the common pests in Australia. It is categorised as a strong flyer given its wings that extend beyond its brownish-black coloured body. In terms of size, adults of this cockroach species can reach a length of up to 38mm. Compared to the American cockroaches, this cockroach species is smaller in size.
Habitat
This cockroach species is primarily seen outdoors, particularly in warm and very moist areas. The availability of a moist environment is vital for the survival of smoky brown cockroaches since they are prone to dehydration. Aside from moist areas, they can also be seen lurking around homes and tree holes. They are known to easily penetrate buildings through openings and gaps in windows, doors, and pipes. During the late dusk or early dawn hours, smoky brown cockroaches leave their hiding places to search for food, especially leftovers, dead insects, and even plant materials. Areas, where the smoky brown cockroaches are found, can be easily identified by seeing the faecal material and droppings they leave behind.
Lifecycle
The lifecycle of the smoky brown cockroach starts from an egg to being an adult within 320 days. An adult female smoky brown cockroach has a lifespan of 218 days while an adult male can live up to 215 days. On average, the female produces 10 egg cases, which normally contain 20 eggs per case.
