All about spiders and how to deal with them

Did you know there are over 8000 varieties of spiders in Australia? Luckily, most of them aren’t a threat to us, but even non-dangerous spiders can be a nuisance around the home. We know that many families struggle with spiders, their sticky webs, and the mess they leave behind, but knowing a little more about them can help.

Identifying Spiders

Daddy long-legs spider

7 to 9 mm long with small bodies and very long legs. They prefer sheltering in houses and garages and are harmless to humans.

Huntsman spider

Comes in various sizes, colours, and patterns, with some species reaching over 160 mm in length. They typically hide in narrow crevices outside the home.

Redback spider

5 mm to 15 mm long with a black body. The females usually have a distinctive red mark on the back, while males might have yellow or white markings. Usually found in dark and dry areas, they can be in the home or outside.

SPIDER BEHAVIOUR

Australian spiders vary greatly, and so can their behaviours. Some are aggressive and solitary, while others are a bit more social. A few species prefer the warmth and shelter of human homes, while others tend to stay in your garden. Our spider control solutions work for all types of spiders

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY SPIDERS

For many people, we don’t have to say it twice—these pests can be scary. But, alongside causing unease and fear, spiders can cause a few other problems. Their webs and the dust and debris that collects in them can cause allergies, some are dangerous if they do bite, they leave messy webs and shedding, and they can attract larger pests.

Tips to prevent spiders

Spider Control East Maitland – Understandably, you may want to reduce the chance of spiders taking up residence in your own home. There are a few home care tips that you can implement to help keep them at bay.

Remove their webs

Dusting away any stray webs in your home can prevent them from rebuilding in the same place.

Fill gaps

Find and seal any gaps that may be attracting spiders. You might even find some webs covering these gaps that you can remove as well.

Limit lighting

Insects love light, and spiders love insects. You can reduce the chance of both pests bothering you by turning off unnecessary lighting in the evening.
