Is it a possum, or is it a rat?
Possum Control East Maitland – One of the most common questions customers ask is whether their noisy neighbour is a possum or a rat. While both pests are drawn to roof spaces, there are some simple ways to tell the difference.
Identifying Possums
Brushtail possum
Between 35 and 55cm with a bushy tail and pointy ears, they weigh between 1.5kg to 4kg. They communicate with smell as well as sound, usually hissing and coughing.
Ringtail possum
Around 30 to 35 cm with rounded ears and a curled tail, these possums prefer nests of twigs and leaves but will enter rooves if they need to.

Preventing possums in your home
As native animals, it’s vital that we manage possums in a way that allows us to live alongside them. When we remove one, they must be released close by. We’ll assess your home for problem areas and fix them so the possum can’t get back in, but there are some steps you can take yourself.
Remove access
As with other pests, you can do a check of your property for entry points. For possums, you should:
- Check roof for missing or moved tiles
- Remove overhanging branches from gutters and roofs
- Cover chimneys when not in use
Use repellents
Some people have success with natural, environmentally safe repellents, such as:
- Motion-sensor lights and sprinklers
- Mix freshly crushed garlic with hot water, infuse overnight, and spray on plants and around the property
- Spread cat or dog fur around gardens and trees near the house to scare the possum away
