What do you need to know about wood borers?
Discovering something eating your house and your furniture can be scary, so it’s definitely a pest problem that you want dealt with quickly. But knowing how to identify a boring beetle can help you tackle the problem early and stop an infestation before it starts.
Identifying Borers
Common furniture beetle
2.7 to 4.5 mm long when full-grown, brown with an oval body. These beetles spend three to four years growing and feasting on wood before breaking out and leaving holes about 1 to 2 mm wide.
Powderpost beetle
Around 7 mm long with a distinct “hooded” head. They are dark brown and shiny. The name comes from their ability to reduce wood to a fine powder, which you may notice around affected areas.
Queensland pine beetles
Also found in NSW. They are around 3 mm, dark, shiny, and round. They leave exit holes 1 mm to 2 mm wide with a honeycomb appearance.

Tips to prevent wood borers
Prevention is cheaper and smoother than dealing with the damage of an infestation. And because some wood borers will reinfest the same wood, it’s a good idea to have a pest controller check for them. In the meantime, though, there are some simple precautions you can take.

Taking great care of your garden and yard can prevent many pests, including borers. You can:

- Avoid mulch against exterior walls
- Keep woodpiles dry and check for borer damage before using for firewood
- Remove garden debris promptly
Examine new items

- Look for small, round or oval holes
- Check for any wood dust (frass)
- Push against wood to see if weakened by damage
- Wear a white glove and run fingers along creases, seams, and corners to pick up any hiding pests
