Why are crickets a problem?

These pests are one of the most common in Australia because they enjoy warm and humid weather. Although you’ll usually spot (or hear) them in the garden, it isn’t unusual for crickets to enter the home. If you think you have a cricket infestation, give us a call, and we can provide you with advice tailored to your situation.

Identifying Crickets

House cricket

1.9 to 22 mm long, light yellow-brown with three dark bands across the head. Despite the name, they usually live outdoors, but you might see them inside in colder weather.

Field cricket

At 1.27 to 3 cm long, they’re a larger species, usually black, and have springing back legs. When the weather cools, they will move from fields into buildings.

Camel cricket

1.9 cm long on average and light to dark brown with darker bands. They have no wings and tend to live in large groups.

CRICKET BEHAVIOUR

The behaviour of these pests can vary depending on the species. Generally, they are active at night and will be attracted by the lights in your home or on your porch. They also do have the potential to bite when mishandled.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY CRICKETS

Being active at night, the chirping of many crickets at once can prevent sleep and cause stress. Some species also tend to chew on textiles, like clothing, furniture, wallpaper, and even bookbinding.

Tips to prevent crickets

If you hear crickets in your garden, you may want to ensure they don’t migrate inside. Of course, we’re always happy to assess your home and implement a long-term prevention strategy, but if you want to start right away, these tips can help.

Garden maintenance

Consistent and thorough maintenance of your yard, particularly up by the house, is important. You can:

  • Trim long grass, pull weeds and remove dense vegetation in a 30 cm radius to the foundation
  • Remove leaf and gardening debris
  • Dispose of piles of bricks, stones, firewood

Reduce entries

This step is a great one as it helps prevent a wide variety of pests. Have a look around your home for potential entry points you can fix, like:

  • Loose or damaged window and door screens
  • Cracks, gaps, and crevices around windows, doorways, and foundation

Reduce lighting

Because lights attract some species, you can:

  • Turn off lights when not in use
  • Install shutters
  • Switch from white lights to yellow
