German Cockroach
Blatella germanica
Characteristics
The German cockroach is the most famous of all infesting cockroaches because it is very hard to exterminate. It is characterised by its light to medium brown colour with two parallel bands on its body. It is smaller than the other cockroach species with a length of only 10 to 15 mm. The males are thinner with a tapered posterior abdomen while the females are thicker with a rounded posterior abdomen.
Habitat
This cockroach species survives in warm and damp areas and emerges at night to look for food. It is usually found in pipes and sewers and prefers to infest houses that have central heating systems. It roams around the bathroom and laundry areas and can proliferate in sinks, pipes, and kitchen cabinets. It prefers to thrive close to humans and can survive on limited resources, making it very hard to exterminate.
Lifecycle
The ootheca (egg cases) of the females can house up to 40 eggs, and these may hatch while it is still attached to its body. Once hatched, these become nymphs where they become active in search of food and water. Nymphs develop for about 40 to 60 days to become fully grown adults.
