Identifying FLEAS & Ticks

Need Content

Need content to remove this placeholder content.

The mite bites a reddish dog

Brown dog tick

Oval and flat with reddish-brown colouring and eight legs. They are initially 3 mm long, growing to 12 mm and turn grey as they feed.

Paralysis tick

A grey body with two pairs of brown legs and one pair of white legs. Before feeding, they are around 3 mm long, growing up to 10 mm.

FLEA & TICK BEHAVIOUR

Thanks to their appearance and biology, you might not see or even notice a tick or its bite until symptoms start. Their small size and dark colour make them hard to see, especially in long grass where they usually dwell.

Then, once a pet picks the tick up, it’s hard to see amongst their fur. The tick’s saliva acts as a numbing agent, so when they bite through the carrier’s skin (human or pet), the victim won’t feel it.

Tips to prevent fleas & ticks

Fast reactions might be needed when a tick does bite. So taking steps to prevent them can save a lot of worry. Here are a few of the easy things you can do:

Remove entry points

Checking your home for possible pest entry points is a great first step. You can:

  • Locate and fill any cracks, gaps, or holes in walls, skirting boards, doorframes, and window frames
  • Install screens and repair holes, gaps, or looseness
  • Seal the bottom of doors with a draft stopper

Pet care

We love our pets, so adding to their care routine should be easy. If you don’t already, you should:

  • Check pets regularly for signs of ticks, especially between toes, inside ears, and under collars
  • Treat pets with vet-approved flea and tick preventers
  • Wash bedding regularly with hot water
  • Keep kennels and beds clean and dry with ample airflow

Garden maintenance

Taking care of your yard prevents pests and makes it a nicer place for you. So, don’t forget to:

  • Regularly mow lawns
  • Remove and control weeds
  • Prune large shrubs to reduce inner humidity
  • Reduce and remove mulch, leaf litter, and other debris
