Sugar Ant

Camponotus consobrinus

Characteristics

Sugar ants are easily recognised by their large size and distinctive colour and they are relatively bigger in size than other ant species. Although they are identified as nuisance pets, they are also considered to be harmless to humans. Their bites don't sting; they have strong mandibles and they can spray acid from their abdomens to deter predators when threatened. The size of sugar ants can range from 2.5mm to 15mm’s long. In terms of their colour, males are usually entirely black, while females have a black head, orange thorax, and orange-banded black abdomen. Workers are distinguishable from soldiers through their smaller and slimmer bodies.

Habitat

Given its name, sugar ants are attracted to sugar and sweet food. They can be found in various places, such as holes in wood, roots of plants, and twigs of trees. This ant species may also be seen between rocks or in the soil. Sugar ants are nocturnal insects and can be found inside homes in the evening or at night time.

Lifecycle

Sugar ants are active during the warmer seasons. They undergo the usual ant life cyclecover several months. Their colonies typically have one queen that can live up to seven years.

FAQs About Sugar Ant

Do sugar ants only eat sugar or sweet food?

Despite being named sugar ants, they do not exclusively eat sugar. They can also prey on insects, plant pollen, and other food scraps. Sugar ants will eat just about any food that they can find but they prefer sweet items.

How do I know if there are sugar ants present in my house?

Like most ants, sugar ants are nocturnal, meaning that they sleep during the day and are active at night. Sugar ants tend to forage just before sunset and two hours after sunset so if they are present in your house, it’s likely you’ll be able to see them during this time when they are most active

Can sugar ants bite?

Sugar ants can bite, but they can’t sting and they usually won't cause any symptoms unless you are highly allergic.
