Sugar Ant
Camponotus consobrinus / Banded Sugar Ant
Characteristics
The Banded Sugar ant is a large, striking ant easily identified by its orange-brown midsection and black head and abdomen. They can range from 5mm to 15mm in length. They are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night, though they may be seen during the day in shaded areas.
Habitat
Sugar ants prefer to nest in the soil or in open spaces such as under rocks, in old stumps, or in the holes of wood. They are common in suburban gardens. While they prefer to stay outdoors, they are frequently drawn inside houses by the smell of sugary foods or fats.
Lifecycle
Sugar ants have a traditional colony structure with a queen and various castes of workers. During late spring or summer, "alates" (winged ants) may emerge from the nest to mate and start new colonies.
