Oriental Cockroach
Blatta orientalis
Characteristics
The Oriental cockroach is also known as water bug or black beetle because of its dark brown to black appearance. An adult is around 22 to 27 mm long. Males are thinner and have wings that cover almost 3/4 of their body, while females are larger and have very short to no wings. Both are known to be flightless.
Habitat
This species inhabits warm and humid places, like underground, drains and sewers, and anywhere else that there is debris lying around. Once the temperature drops, it invades houses where it stays in sinks, pipes, and toilets. Because of this, the Oriental cockroach is known to emerge seasonally, only during spring and summer.
Lifecycle
The female Oriental cockroach bears an ootheca (egg case) that carries around 16 to 18 eggs. Once hatched, these eggs become nymphs that undergo seven moulting stages for around 12 months before turning into adults. The adults are capable of mating any time of the year to produce another generation of cockroaches.
