Funnel Ant
Aphaenogaster spp.
Characteristics
Funnel ants are recognised for their capacity to dig up to 60cm, despite their small size which ranges only up to 5mm in length. They have tan-brownish bodies which make them hard to spot in the soil. Despite being considered as shy, they can be quite defensive when it comes to safeguarding their nests.
Habitat
Funnel ants prefer to reside outside, especially in open areas where they can create funnels as their nests. They are commonly found in urban areas and forests. In terms of their diet, this ant species primarily prefers proteins but may occasionally consume sugar. The nests they build in open ground make the lawn unstable and can collapse when walked on, making them a potential threat to humans. Funnel ants can also form super colonies that can cause significant damage to property if not addressed promptly.
Lifecycle
The mating process of funnel ants usually occurs in the air during the warmer months, starting from November. Like other ants, funnel ants go through four life cycle stages, starting from eggs, then larvae, pupae, and finally, to become fully grown adults. It takes around 50 to 60 days for the funnel ants to complete their transformation from eggs to adults.
