Coastal Brown Ant

Pheidole megacephala

Characteristics

Coastal brown ants are recognised as a highly invasive species of ants found globally. They have shiny heads and range in colour from yellow-brown to dark reddish. These ants have three distinct body parts: the head, thorax, and a considerably large abdomen. Unlike other ants, coastal brown ants have a smaller size, with adult ants measuring only between 1.5mm to 2.5mm in length.

Habitat

Coastal brown ants are adaptable to both indoor and outdoor environments and are commonly found in dry soil, lawns, agricultural areas, paving, and bricks. When inside, they may be observed on walls and skirting boards. Coastal brown ants are known to create mounds at the top of their nests and leave dirt near the edges of pavements, making them more visible. They typically feed on meat, sweets, fruit, and greasy foods.

Lifecycle

Coastal brown ants have one or two reproductive queens in each colony that shed their wings after mating. The rest of the colony consists of winged males that mate with the queen. The eggs hatch into larvae, which are then fed by the adults. After reaching adulthood, the wingless worker ants gather food and maintain the nest, while the soldier ants defend the colony. The queen ants have a lifespan of several years, whereas worker ants can only survive for about one year.

FAQs About Coastal Brown Ant

Why are coastal brown ants considered invasive?

Invasive is a term used by scientists to describe ants that were introduced into new areas that are not their natural habitat. They have African origin and they tend to invade foraging areas of other ant colonies. This makes them a threat to the native ants of Australia.

How do coastal brown ants form colonies?

These ants form interconnected colonies that can become super-colonies when merged. They often nest outdoors but they also invade indoors. They are known to disturb other colonies of native ants to expand their nests.

What are the signs of coastal brown ant infestation?

You can spot them when you see interconnected holes with small mounds next to them. Coastal brown ants are generally seen in and around houses that are in urbanised areas. Because of this, you can see large numbers of these ants on the surface near areas that are always busy like kitchens and bathrooms.
