Characteristics
The Argentine ant is a highly invasive and aggressive species known for forming "super-colonies." These ants are typically small, measuring about 2.2 to 2.8mm in length, and are light to dark brown in colour. Unlike many other species, Argentine ants do not have a strong odour when crushed, but they are easily identified by their sheer numbers and rapid movement. They are notorious for displacing native ant species and dominating urban environments.
Habitat
Argentine ants prefer moist environments and are commonly found in damp soil, under logs, stones, or paving stones. In residential settings, they are frequent indoor invaders, especially during extreme weather conditions like heavy rain or drought. They often nest near food sources, such as garden beds, mulch, or even wall voids and sub-floors inside the home.
Lifecycle
A unique trait of the Argentine ant is its massive colony structure featuring multiple queens (polygyny). This allows the colony to grow exponentially. They reproduce through "budding," where a queen and a group of workers leave the main nest to start a new one nearby. Because all nests in an area are related, they do not fight each other, leading to vast, interconnected networks.
