Argentine Ant
Linepithema humile
Characteristics
The Argentine ant is recognised as an invasive species, capable of dominating and displacing indigenous ant populations, which can have a negative impact on the local ecosystem. Typically, these ants are brown, varying in colour from light to dark, with their abdomen usually being darker. Adults can reach a length of 3mm. Similar to bull ants, they exhibit aggressive behaviour, and while they can inflict mild bites, they do not have a sting.
Habitat
Argentine ants have a unique behaviour compared to other ant species as their nests can be difficult to locate due to their ability to travel long distances to find food. These ants are highly adaptable and can thrive both indoors and outdoors, particularly in temperate coastal regions. Outdoors, they typically establish shallow nests in tree trunks, leaf litter, or beneath objects. Conversely, indoors, they can be found in damp areas, such as kitchens or bathrooms, under paving, or in roof and wall cavities.Argentine ants have a unique behaviour compared to other ant species as their nests can be difficult to locate due to their ability to travel long distances to find food. Lifecycle
In the beginning of spring, Argentine ant colonies begin to form as winged queens and fertile males emerge. These ants are capable of creating vast super-colonies, with each colony containing numerous queens. Each queen can be responsible for up to 100 workers. It takes roughly three months for Argentine ant eggs to reach maturity, and once they do, they can begin reproducing.
