Argentine Ant

Linepithema humile

Characteristics

The Argentine ant is recognised as an invasive species, capable of dominating and displacing indigenous ant populations, which can have a negative impact on the local ecosystem. Typically, these ants are brown, varying in colour from light to dark, with their abdomen usually being darker. Adults can reach a length of 3mm. Similar to bull ants, they exhibit aggressive behaviour, and while they can inflict mild bites, they do not have a sting.

Habitat

Argentine ants have a unique behaviour compared to other ant species as their nests can be difficult to locate due to their ability to travel long distances to find food. These ants are highly adaptable and can thrive both indoors and outdoors, particularly in temperate coastal regions. Outdoors, they typically establish shallow nests in tree trunks, leaf litter, or beneath objects. Conversely, indoors, they can be found in damp areas, such as kitchens or bathrooms, under paving, or in roof and wall cavities.Argentine ants have a unique behaviour compared to other ant species as their nests can be difficult to locate due to their ability to travel long distances to find food. Lifecycle

In the beginning of spring, Argentine ant colonies begin to form as winged queens and fertile males emerge. These ants are capable of creating vast super-colonies, with each colony containing numerous queens. Each queen can be responsible for up to 100 workers. It takes roughly three months for Argentine ant eggs to reach maturity, and once they do, they can begin reproducing.

FAQs About Argentine Ant

How big can colonies of Argentine ants get?

Argentine ant colonies can reach up to 10,000 living ants and create nests far from their foraging areas. Because of their large numbers, they can gather many resources and compete with other ant species for survival.

How do Argentine Ants behave?

These ants are known for their nomadic lifestyle, meaning they will continually look for food but will not stay in one place for long periods. This behavior leads to these ants spreading through areas quickly as they follow trails left by other colony members.

Can Argentine ants harm me?

Argentine ants rarely bite and do not harm humans. However, they are known to be aggressive towards other ant species and native insects in their foraging area. Regardless, they should still be treated to avoid more significant problems such as indoor infestations. When you suspect that an infestation may be present by seeing live ants or mounds, call us immediately for efficient ant control and treatment services.
